The Jew has a biblical obligation to recite the “Shema” (Hear O’ Israel, God is our Lord, God is One) - a declaration of faith to God’s “Oneness,” twice a day, evening and morning. Before the great dispersion of Jews by Rome, the Men of the Great Assembly formulated our prayers as a replacement to the now defunct daily Temple service. These services contain the “Shema” and are the apex of these prayers.
These great men focused the prayer immediately prior to this declaration on the love relationship between God and His people Israel. In our song, we proclaim that we require God’s Merciful qualities to help us understand and apply the words of His Torah with thge highest form of devotion - love.
Reb Yosil wrote this song on the night his oldest son was born. As a praise to G-d in thanks to him.
