When I first made Aliyah to Israel in 1969, I wanted to learn modern Hebrew and was placed on an Ulpan on beautiful Kibbutz Sedot Yam in Caesarea, on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. I was totally enthralled with the Kibbutz, it was smack dab in the middle of Roman ruins, there was history all over the area and the Kibbutz in particular, every house was a museum of archaeological findings and the area was stunning. The land comprised of rolling sand dunes covered in short cactus and crab grass, the sea was magnificent, with sunsets that were awesome and I made wonderful, lifelong friends.
The “Kibbutzniks” constantly spoke of Chana Senesh, a member of the Kibbutz who was a poet, a member of the British Army’s Jewish Brigade and died at the hands of the Nazis in Hungary in 1944 at the age of 35. Among her poems was one called Eli, Eli - HaLicha L’Kesaria (My God, My God, - Journey to Caesarea) that became an internationally acclaimed song that represented Israel in music, plays, films and literature.
When my band, Reb Yosil and the Kosher Gravy Co. played our Yom HaAtzma’ut concert last May, the show opend with the national anthems of the United States and Israel done by Cantorial Soloist Neil Michaels and Guitarits Ari Teitel. After which r Neil Michaels and I did a duet of Eli, Eli. This is our rendition of the song.
