Concluding prayer of the Amidah, words by Mar bar Ravina (4th century Amora, based on Psalms 1 and Tractate Berachot 18a), music by Reb Yosil Rosenzweig
All of Jewish prayer in written in first person plural, we therefore say to God, help us, save us, or heal us, etc. This prayer is found at the very end of the Amidah (standing silent devotion and a rabbinical obligation) is written in first person singular. We ask God to help ME to use my power of speech correctly.
Our commentators state that God created the universe and all its dimensions using the power of speech. This is the image of God by which all of mankind was created and distinguishes humans from all other life forms. Speech can be creative and good or, it can be destructive and evil. We therefore ask God to aid us in our use of speech through the observance of Torah law.
This paragraph was especially meaningful to my wife Kathy A"H. She always felt that as humans, it was important to elevate ourselves through our proper use of speech.
