about

The poem Yah Ribon Olam, was written by Rabbi Israel Najara (1555-1628), a native of Damascus who later lived in Safed, in the Upper Galilee. He was one of the prominent members of the Kabbalistic school at Safed, where he spent most of his life and later served as a rabbi in Gaza. It is thought that he composed 650 hymns. This poem is a hymn of praise to God, a major theme of Shabbat liturgy.

The initial letters of the verses of Yah Ribon Olam form the name-acrostic "Yisrael" by which the poet's name and memory is immortalized.

Though Yah Ribon Olam contains no allusion to Shabbat, it is chanted on Friday evenings in Jewish communities all over the world. After describing the wonders of God's creation, the poet, Kabbalistically inspired, concludes with a prayer for the redemption of Israel and the restoration of Yerushalayim "the city of beauty."

I composed the music to this poem while returning to my home one Friday night in Safed. I had been at a seminar of “movers and shakers” in the Israeli Torah educational system and was very inspired by the event, Walking through the quiet streets of Sefad I began singing on my way home and by the time I got home, the song was complete, the words fit the tune and the love between God and His people that emanated from this song was manifest at that moment in my life.
