When you consider that God’s law is supreme and any infraction is in fact an act of treason, then what should happen to a transgressor? The 613 biblical commandments have an established structure called Halachah - the way. This construct is not accommodating to reinterpretation, revision or relevance. Treason is punishable by death in most legal societies including governments. God in His mercy has allowed His followers to use repentance as a means to “wipe the slate clean” from sin, so to speak, and avoid the harshness of punishment.
These words introduce the evening prayers because darkness often brings about trepidation and fear. God’s mercy escorts us through our times of darkness and insecurity and accompanies us to well-being and light.
